Some argued that Battlefield 1942 had one of the most realistic physics and game engines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_engine) available in FPSs on the market when it came out in 2002[citation needed] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources); however, certain details make this debatable. For example, tanks tended to loft their projectiles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell_%28projectile%29) (which should have had a very flat trajectory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trajectory_of_a_projectile)) and target leading (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leading_targets) was arguably due to game and network lag (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lag) rather than programmed physics.
Each battle takes place on one of several maps located in a variety of places and famous battlefields in all of the major theaters of World War II: the Pacific (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_War), European (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Theater_of_World_War_II), North African (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_African_campaign) and Eastern (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Front_%28World_War_II%29) Fronts. While the combat is always Axis Powers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_Power) versus Allies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allies_of_World_War_II), the location determines which specific armies are used (for example, on the Iwo Jima (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Iwo_Jima) map, it is Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Japanese_Army) versus the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_of_the_United_States), while on the Battle of Britain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Britain) map, it is Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wehrmacht) versus the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Armed_Forces)). The maps in Battlefield 1942 are based on real battles, but are not necessarily realistically portrayed.
